  • SilkPeel vs. Hydrafacial

Many patients are familiar with the Hydra Facial, a hydrating microdermabrasion procedure.  At Skye Dermatology, we are pleased to offer the SilkPeel, which has a number of key advantages over the Hydra Facial.

First, the SilkPeel uses individual prepackaged treatment heads ensuring no cross contamination between patients.  This is in contrast to the Hydra Facial tips, which are reused on subsequent patients.

The SilkPeel also uses individually packaged infusion solutions.  Basically, the solutions are always fresh.  This is in contrast to the Hydra Facial, which houses large containers of multi-use solutions, which could affect the efficacy due to exposure to light and air.

The SilkPeel also allows for individualized treatments by being able to customize the strength of treatment (the grit of the diamond treatment head).  This is opposed to a one size fits all treatment of the Hydra Facial.  For patients with more delicate skin, needing a lighter touch, or for those with thicker skin needing a stronger treatment, no options exist with the Hydra Facial.

In summary, the SilkPeel has many advantages over the Hydra Facial, at a cost much less.  Whether you have acne, pigmentary problems, or lines and wrinkles, the SilkPeel treatment can help you.

The average price of the Hydra Facial is $204 compared to the SilkPeel price of $136.  Call today to gain the benefits of the SilkPeel and see for yourself the SilkPeel difference!

  • Tips for Aging Skin

Skye Dermatology helps you with ways to reduce the premature aging of skin

I know we all move to Florida for the sun but the sun plays a major role in the premature aging of our skin. Although the sun may be the number one factor there are also other factors that can age our skin quicker than it naturally would.

Here in South Florida you need to protect your skin from the sun every day. Not just when spending a day at Jupiter Beach or running along A1A to Juno Pier and back, sun protection is an essential part of everyday life. Sitting for an hour’s lunch in the sun at Guanabanas or just stopping and talking to a friend in your community for 20 minutes with the sun is beating down on you is not good. The correct clothing and using sunscreen that is a minimum of SPF 30, and water-resistant is a must. Men as well as ladies should apply sunscreen every day to all skin that is not covered by clothing. And please help your children to get into the habit of using it regularly. We see way too many red bodies paddle boarding along the Intracoastal.

Even on a cloudy day in December, because of our proximity to the equator, you will get burnt without the right kind of protection.

    • If you like the bronzed look, apply a self-tanner rather than getting a tan. Getting that bronzed look from the sun prematurely ages your skin. And remember, this holds true if you get a tan from a tanning bed or other indoor tanning equipment as well, as they all radiate the harmful UV rays that accelerate the aging of your skin.

    • OK another reason to stop smoking, as if there wasn’t enough! Smoking greatly speeds up how quickly your skin ages and causes wrinkles and a dull, ashen complexion.

    • Avoid repetitive facial expressions, yes even smiling too much, because when you make a facial expression, you contract the underlying muscles. Repeatedly contracting the same muscles over many years, causes these “laughter lines” to become permanent.

    • Drink more water, and then some.

    • Get into the habit of wearing sunglasses, wearing sunglasses can help reduce lines caused by squinting.

    • Eating a healthy, well-balanced diet with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables may help prevent damage that leads to premature skin aging. There are also findings that suggest that a poor diet containing high levels of sugar or other refined carbohydrates can add to the acceleration of aging.

    • Sorry but yes, consuming large amounts of alcohol affects the quality of your skin as well. Alcohol dehydrates the skin, accelerating the loss of elasticity so in time it damages the skin.

    • If you are able, exercise whenever you can. Moderate exercise can improve your circulation and also helps boost the immune system. This, in turn, may give the skin a more youthful appearance.

    • Gently cleanse your skin. If you are scrubbing your skin clean this can irritate your skin. This irritation can also accelerate skin aging. Regular washing helps to remove pollution, makeup, and other substances without being an irritant. Ask Skye Dermatology for advice regarding a cleanser that is right for your skin type.

    • CrossFit addict? One of the Lycra clad cyclists that zoom past us routinely on their way to Jupiter Island? Daily visits to Jupiter Fitness, Hard Exercise Works or one of the many gyms in the Jupiter area? Then you need to wash your face twice a day, especially after sweating profusely. Perspiration, especially when wearing a hat or helmet is an irritant to the skin, so you need to wash your skin as soon as possible after sweating. Helps with your personal hygiene too!

    • Always apply a good facial moisturizer daily. A good moisturizer helps keep the water in our skin, giving it a more youthful appearance. Again ask your Skye Dermatologist if you are unsure what is right for your skin type.

    • Drink even more water!

    • Even people who already have signs of premature skin aging can benefit from making lifestyle changes.

Remember it is never too late to benefit from a lifestyle change.

If the signs of aging skin bother you, come see us at Skye Center for Dermatology. We have a vast array of new treatments and less invasive techniques for smoothing out wrinkles, tightening skin, and generally improving your complexion.

  • The Benefits of Botox

Over the last decade, Botox has become a household name. We see its benefits on T.V and in magazines on a daily basis. While most people associate Botox with its anti-aging properties, it actually has a wide variety of medical benefits that are coming to light each day. From beauty to necessity, Botox is truly making a name for itself all over the world.

Anti-aging is what comes to mind when most people think of Botox. As we age, it’s not uncommon to want to hold on to our youth. While plastic surgery may be an option for some, many people find it to be much too costly or frightening. Botox injections work as an effective, noninvasive alternative to plastic surgery. When injected into the face, Botox relaxes the facial muscles to reduce the appearance of wrinkles which produces its well-known anti-aging effects.

Many people choose Botox over cosmetic surgery because of its low cost. While a simple surgical procedure can cost thousands of dollars, Botox can achieve many of the same effects at a much lower cost.

    Temporary results

Other than cost, one aspect of cosmetic surgery that causes a lot of people to shy away is the permanence of the procedure. Botox injections allow you to achieve the younger look you desire without having to worry that you might not like it. Since Botox typically lasts about 4 months, there is no need to worry about expensive reversal procedures if you’re unhappy with the results.

    Manageable side effects

The other main concern many people have when it comes to cosmetic surgery is the extensive healing period. Many people are left in bandages for long periods of time after cosmetic surgery. With Botox, side effects are typically limited to minor swelling and bruising which usually resolves within a few days.

    Reduced sweating

One of the most well-known non-cosmetic benefits of Botox is its ability to reduce sweating. While sweating is necessary to regulate body temperature, some people suffer from an embarrassing condition known as Hyperhidrosis which causes them to produce much more sweat than needed. When Botox is injected into the underarms, feet or palms, it relaxes the muscles and reduces the activity of sweat glands.

With all of these incredible benefits, it’s clear why Botox has made such a great name for itself in recent years. While a few ill-equipped medical practitioners may have caused some to view Botox as a cosmetic disaster, those who know how to properly administer it are providing patients with the youthfulness they desire.

  • Ultherapy

Non-invasive cosmetic procedures are soaring in popularity, and among them, Ultherapy has quickly established itself as THE procedure to have.  Rated as best in-office procedure by New Beauty Magazine, Ultherapy uses focused ultrasound to lift and tighten the neck, chin and brow.   Ultherapy is performed as a single treatment with no downtime.  Results are seen over 3-6 months.

  • Healthy Skin for the New Year with a Priori MD Peel

The New Year is a great time to get a fresh start on healthy skin. One of my favorite tricks to help my skin look its best is to have a once a year mid-strength chemical peel. Chemical peels are relatively inexpensive compared to laser treatments, safe and effective for brightening, smoothing and clarifying skin, which are all things I need after another year of living in Florida! With the holidays behind us, and less sun exposure in winter, January is the perfect time for a peel.

My favorite peel is the Priori MD Peel. A top skin care chemist developed the peel, creating a unique blend of ingredients to deliver significant results with little downtime, all in a single treatment session. Designed with key anti-inflammatory ingredients, the Priori peel helps fade brown spots, soften fine lines, and improve skin tone and texture.

The peel procedure itself takes about 30 minutes. Your skin will develop a tanned appearance over the first 48 hours, followed by peeling on days 3 and 4 (so two days of actual downtime during the peeling stage). Patients often ask if peels are painful. This peel is designed with a first layer that helps to “numb” the skin. I had 6 layers applied (which is the most) and experienced a 5 out of 10 on a pain scale. Easy! And the results are fantastic. Call our office today (561) 820-0155 to learn more about the Priori MD peel.

  • Getting Ready for Fall

Fall is a great time to undo damage caused by the summer sun and get your skin glowing for the holidays.   I often see patients with sun spots (also called age or liver spots) and rough textured skin after spending the summers boating, golfing and just plain having fun!  Interestingly, studies have shown that sun spots contribute more significantly to the appearance of aged skin than wrinkles.

Luckily, our practice offers scientifically based prescription products, natural lighteners (for those interested in a more organic approach), innovative lasers (Medlite, VPerfecta and Fractional CO2), and gentle yet effective chemical peels all designed to treat sun spots.  An individual’s skin type and the amount of sun damage will determine which approach is best suited for each patient’s needs.  I am always happy to meet with patients and give my personal recommendations.   For more information, visit our website at http://www.skyedermatology.com
